I think I've found a different, definitely less cumbersome method, and probably better method. The Cell Fracture tool has a debug boolean flag which leaves all the boolean modifiers intact, which produces this


...and while the previous UV texture distortion is gone, the entire mesh has a certain stone wall look to it due to each fragment having smooth normals (this must be the default prior to collapsing/applying the booleans). So it seems I've traded one problem for another, except now I can apply the angle based AutoSmooth on each fragment, and voilĂ .
