 Minor caveat regarding this solution: all of the boolean modifiers must be applied prior to making any transform changes. I suspected this might happen, but was hoping due to all of the fragments being parented to the original mesh that I might be able to circumvent this. Well, apparently not. Couldn't quite figure out how to apply the modifier to all ~430 objects simultaneously and there was no way I was going to do this one-by-one. Apparently there are a few methods of doing this and the first one I landed on that worked was converting all of the fragments to a mesh, which technically they already were, but doing so collapses the modifier...simply to 3DS Max. Great
